Ground Squirrel Monitoring
Volunteers will participate in many aspects of re-introducing SIGS species into native habitat and will monitor the success.
General Responsibilities:- Provide supplemental feed to squirrels
- Track and monitor squirrels with radio collars
- Identify and map burrows
- Simple observations of activity and behavior
- Document evidence of predation, deaths, births, etc.
Training Sessions:A training session with the zoo veterinarian will take place before monitoring begins. (Date TBD)
Requirements:- Must be over 18 years old
- Completion of some college level Biology classes
- Participate in the March Exhibit prep day (date TBD)
- Participate in a March trapping day (date TBD)
- Participate in release site prep (April date TBD)
- Must commit to one shift per week for May – June, 2010
- Shift time is 8:00am – 4:00pm; Monday through Thursday
- Participate in a volunteer orientation and training taught by Dr. Guthrie
- Submit an application and accept offered position after an interview
- Abide by all policies in the Volunteer Handbook
- Interest in local and global conservation work
- Submit to Federal background check
- Ability to drive to and from work sites in Emmett and Payette
- Must submit a negative TB test at own expense annually

Acceptance into the program is based on quality
of the application and interview. Interviews will last one hour, and will be
conducted at Zoo Boise, after the application is accepted. Applications must be
postmarked no later than March 1 for the spring session and
September 1 for the fall session. Bring applications to Zoo
