Zoo Boise Opens Boat Ride to Africa

9/21/2009

Visitors to Zoo Boise may now enjoy an exciting adventure from Boise to Africa with the opening of the new African Boat Ride. The boat ride and accompanying exhibit are the final pieces of the Mr. & Mrs. Clarence B. Wilmot African Plains Exhibit, which opened in October.

The boat ride begins at the Africa Departure Dock near the zoo aviaries where visitors will board either the S.S. Kiboko or S.S. Mamba. The boats are named after the Swahili words for hippo and crocodile, respectively. Once aboard, the boat will take visitors around part of the zoo lagoon to the new Keynetics Lemur Exhibit. The ring-tailed lemurs have moved from their exhibit in the Small Animal Kingdom to their summer home at the end of the lagoon. The Keynetics Lemur Exhibit is only viewable from the boats. After viewing the lemurs, the boat ride will travel to the Africa Arrival Dock where visitors may view the giraffes and lions.
The Africa Boat Ride runs everyday. Tickets are $2 per person and may be purchased at the Africa Departure Dock. Riders must be at least 30” tall to take the boat ride.

Located in beautiful Julia Davis Park, Zoo Boise is home to more than 250 animals from 105 species, including lions, hyenas, snow leopards, and a komodo dragon. Zoo Boise is accredited by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums, a national organization that supports excellence in animal care, conservation, education, science and recreation.
